Steve and I had a lovely weekend in Kansas City, Missouri, and now we are on a week-long break from our jobs that seem like vacations in and of themselves. We’re spending our week off visiting with friends and relaxing in Boulder, which is close to our next destination, Salida, Colorado, where we’ll participate in the Colorado Mountain Bike Summit. I got my hair cut and am currently convincing Steve to do our taxes; and we’ll go skiing tomorrow, get our oil changed, enjoy some good Boulder food and drink, repack our IMBAru, figure out how the heck to finish our masters, and get over the cold that hit us square in the face without notice. Back on the road in a week’s time!

Steve and I travel across the United States teaching sustainable trailbuilding, and although it might seem like a 24/7 job, it’s not. Our weekends are approximately Monday afternoon to Wednesday, so on those days, we try to take the scenic route. Instead of the interstates, we veer off the beaten path to check out what doesn’t get checked out too often. It’s pretty funny chatting with park rangers whose parks don’t get visited too much – they’re very eager to share information! So far we’ve seen some hidden gems of the American landscape that we would have likely never otherwise seen had it not been for this little book (thanks Mom!) and our trusty IMBAru – she likes adventures, too. It’s easy for us to think that Boulder is the center of the world, but every place is unique in its own right, and so far, so very different from

Here’s a blog post that I wrote this morning for the IMBA blog… A couple viewpoints from our past weekend in Texas. On to Kansas City, MO next weekend, then some time off in Colorado. The rest of my Lake Meredith pictures are on my flickr page. Write this down on a post-it and stick it on the fridge: Mountain biking at Lake Meredith. You’ll want to ride there in the next couple years. That is, if you’re into flowy singletrack, sweeping vistas, and cool breezes upon grassy mesas. Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is in the Texas Panhandle, a short hour north of Amarillo. Traditionally, the spot has been used for boating, off-roading, hunting and swimming, but it will soon be home to mountain biking trails – the fun kind. For some background, IMBA has been working with the National Park Service for over 20 years to develop mountain

We made the drive from Dallas, TX to Fayetteville, AR today, via eastern Oklahoma. We work in Bentonville, AR (home of Walmart) this Thursday through Sunday. The drive into Arkansas was so beautiful that we decided to take the longer, scenic route. We turned around mid-route to capture some of the funny sights below! We ended our scenic drive at the Prairie Grove Battlefield Park, just 15 minutes outside of Fayetteville. It’s the site of a famous Civil War battle and key Confederate loss for the Union. The state of Arkansas commemorated the historic event by creating a park in its location, and relocating may historic homes to the small park and one mile interpretive path. My favorite part of the park were these old buildings. They were simple, well-built, functional, and very well curated. The worn wood has textures and character that you just don’t see in newer buildings.
